Renovated 1910 Oakbank home with profitable vineyard lease up for grabs

An Oakbank home has been updated through a top-to-toe renovation and, with its owners now downsizing, is ready to be loved by someone else.

It could also be a handy little earner.

Jon and Heather Cranna bought the 132 Shillabeer Rd home in 2003, attracted by its idyllic location and enviable vistas.

How’s that for an outlook?

The home’s character facade.

“We used to live in Hahndorf and loved the Hills, but I’ve always wanted to own a vineyard,” Jon says.

“I’d always bought property with my head and not my heart, but this one I absolutely bought with my heart and not my head, and we’ve had two decades of fantastic times here.

“The vineyard overlooks the Onkaparinga Valley and we’re surrounded by rural properties – some with horses, some with cattle – it’s so beautiful here.”

From its dairy farm roots, the 1910-built bluestone home has been extended over the years using stone from its own quarry, and features three bedrooms, an open-plan living and dining room, a separate open-plan kitchen, meals and living room; a pergola and a double garage.

Outside you’ll find two sheds, a studio, a dam, two bores and 5.92ha of sauvignon blanc and chardonnay grapes.

“We had my son’s wedding with 150 people here over this past long weekend and it went spectacularly,” Jon says.

“We’ve had lots of parties here and sitting out on the veranda with a drink overlooking the vines – it’s a lovely way to spend an afternoon.”

“Plus we lease the vineyard, so we can enjoy the lifestyle without the hassle.”

Jon says the lease brings in $24,000 a year, with the property’s solar array bringing in around another $3000 to $4000.

“We’ll miss it terribly and we’ve enjoyed every minute here,” Jon says.
