Beethoven-linked pianist’s $2m Metcalfe East retreat for sale

A hilltop home built by a concert pianist whose musical lineage traces directly to Beethoven has hit the market in Metcalfe East.

The three-bedroom Lifehouse Design residence on 12.2ha is owned by Sally Mellor, a classical pianist who studied under Australian mentor Ruth Nye — a direct student of twentieth-century master Claudio Arrau, whose teachers included Franz Liszt, Carl Czerny and Ludwig van Beethoven.

Mellor and her late husband, Cambridge philosopher Professor D. H. (Hugh) Mellor, designed the property as a sustainable retreat that connects art, intellect and nature.

The house points due north to capture natural light and panoramic views across rolling hills.

Deep window seats wrap the main living zone around a wood fireplace, with double glazing, three layers of insulation and cross-ventilation eliminating the need for airconditioning.

Floors of Chinese marble provide thermal balance, while spotted-gum joinery and Bosch appliances anchor a gas-free, all-electric kitchen.

Ten solar panels power the home through a inverter, with easy expansion for battery storage.

Two 50,000-litre tanks supply water, and a roof-mounted irrigation system adds fire protection through summer.

Outside, the late Professor Mellor created a “living bird and animal hide” with wattles, hakeas and grevilleas blooming from May to January.

The gardens attract native birds and butterflies and require minimal watering beyond the house fringe.

The property also includes a powered shed, study, two bathrooms and a music room that opens directly to the garden.

The home has a $1.9m-$2m price guide.
