NT lad launches YouTube channel to showcase fishing his backyard and beyond

A young Territorian is looking to hook a few followers after a passion for fishing that grew from landing barra in his own backyard inspired him to launch his own YouTube Channel.

Grady James, 9, grew up with a barra-filled dam at his back door on the Bees Creek property he calls home.

And it remains his favourite spot to have a flick.

“(The best part about it) is you can fish whenever you want,” he said.

“My mates Jack, Ollie and Vincent come over sometimes and we go in my boat and catch live bait and set jug lines.”

The youngster said his earliest fishing memories were of pulling crab pots in and sitting on his dad’s lap to drive a boat, but he didn’t land a catch until the ripe old age of three.

“I needed help winding the fish in,” he said.

Since then, the made keen fisho has refined his craft, reeling in an 88cm barra in Kununurra and a 75cm barra in his backyard dam.

Grady also mastered whizzing around the damn in his own little tinny with Watersnake motor.

“My favourite thing to do is to go on overnighters with dad, (dad’s friends) Stu and Chris, and my mates Jack and Ollie,” he said.

“Last time we went to the Little Moyle and slept in the boat for three nights.

“I caught goldies and barra and queenfish.

“I also love bottom bouncing where there are reefs or structure.”

About a month ago, Grady took his love of fishing to the world via a new YouTube channel, @GradyNT.

The little Top Ender said he was motivated by the likes of Miller Wilson, Back 2 Basics and Outdoor Boys on the social media platform.

“(I want to share) all the cool things I get to do in the NT, like camping, fishing and hunting,” he said.

Grady’s parents Jocelyn and Adam James have been helping with filming and editing.

Mrs James said since Grady never stopped talking about fishing, they decided why not let him share his passion with others.

“Grady has tried BMX, soccer, tennis, swimming, marital arts and basketball, but all he wants to do is go fishing, so at the moment, we’re going with it,” she said.

“Grady is quite shy normally, but comes alive when he gets to teach people what he’s learnt about fishing, like how to throw a cast net.

“(The channel) is also a great way of documenting all the awesome things he gets to do.

“It gets him outside, it gives him some time away from his siblings and the chaos of being in a big family, and it also (gives him) quality time with Adam.

“His cousins interstate love watching his videos and it helps them keep in touch.”
