In-laws are forever: Coastal home comes with grave condition

Forget the white picket fence and the sound of crashing waves – this idyllic Cornish cottage comes with a permanent house guest, and she’s not paying rent.

A charming stone cottage in the seaside town of Perranporth, UK, has hit the market for £300,000 (AU$618,500), but there’s a grave condition: the previous owner’s mother is buried in the garden, and potential buyers are forbidden from moving her.

The listing, by Clive Pearce Property, makes it clear this isn’t your average deceased estate. “When the deceased’s mother died she was buried in the garden and the grave still exists just yards from the cottage,” the listing states.

“It was the daughter’s wish that her mother’s grave should not be exhumed, destroyed or interfered with in any way.”

Talk about a mother-in-law who’s always watching.

But the real question for buyers is: do you really want to look after someone else’s mother in law?

Located in the sleepy town of Perranporth, Cornwall, the cottage itself looks like something straight out of a fairytale, with ivy-covered walls and quaint chimneys.

However, inside, it’s a renovator’s delight – or nightmare, depending on your perspective. Damp-stained floors and peeling wallpaper are just the beginning.

But for those with a vision, the cottage boasts original period features like deep fireplaces, timber beams and sash windows.

“If you are looking for a comprehensive renovation project and a character property in a great location, this three-bedroom detached character cottage is bound to be of interest,” the listing says.

How good is this original wallpaper?

There’s just one small catch (besides the garden grave, of course): the property isn’t considered suitable for mortgage lending, so cash buyers only need apply.

Despite the unusual circumstances, the property is already generating “a huge amount of interest from buyers all over the country,” according to a spokesperson for Clive Pearce Property.

“It’s always exciting to handle unusual properties and this one certainly falls into that category.”
