Ditch the controller, grab a sword: Real-life Minecraft castle up for grabs

Forget pixelated landscapes and crafting tables – you could soon be living in your very own Minecraft world, no console required.

A sprawling castle in Charlestown, Indiana, has hit the market, and it looks like it’s been plucked straight from the blocky depths of the beloved video game.


With the recent release of the Minecraft movie starring Jack Black and Jason Momoa, the timing couldn’t be better to embrace your inner Steve (or Alex!).

Property owner David Birdsell is selling his unique 8-acre property, complete with a massive cinderblock structure that bears an uncanny resemblance to a Minecraft fortress.

Dubbed Birdsell Castle, this isn’t just a hollow shell.

Inside, you’ll find all the modern amenities, like a kitchen and living room, alongside quirky additions that would make any Minecraft player feel right at home.

Think blacksmith shop for crafting tools, a vampire crypt, a cell, and even an apothecary for brewing potions.

Originally listed for nearly $1.3 million (AU$1.99m), the price has been slashed to a more manageable $995,000 (AU$1.5m).

Birdsell, who snapped up the property sight unseen in 2021, is ready to pass on the pickaxe. “Every day you walk through this castle, you’re amazed,” he told the Courier Journal.
“Selling it is more like giving somebody else an opportunity to enjoy this four years that I’ve had.”

Before its transformation into a real-life Minecraft masterpiece, the property served as a water reservoir for an Army ammunition plant.

Prior owner Mackey Griffin transformed the abandoned building into the castle in the 1990s.

While you won’t find any actual creepers lurking in the shadows, the castle does boast two bedrooms in its towers that are completely renovated and available for overnight guests. Birdsell has also embraced the castle’s potential as a unique event space, hosting medieval and Renaissance festivals, Viking and pirate gatherings, and even dungeon weddings.

Officially listed as a three-bedroom, three-bathroom house, Birdsell claims the property actually has eight bedrooms and eight bathrooms in various stages of completion.

The living space totals around 20,000 square feet, not including a 12-car garage.

And let’s not forget the courtyard inside the 20-foot-tall castle walls – perfect for fending off those pesky zombies!

According to the listing, the castle also features a throne room, formal dining room, great dining hall, a hidden entrance to the dungeon, a pirate deck, mermaid pond, beer garden, two stages for entertaining, and even a moat with defence towers.

While the castle furnishings, such as iron chandeliers and suits of armour, aren’t included in the sale price, Birdsell is open to negotiation.

“It’s definitely not for a conservative buyer,” Birdsell said.

“Imagine having your kids picked up by a school bus in front of your castle. I think the buyer is going to be somebody that sees the property and the minute they step into it, they have no question in their mind they want to be here.”
