Winter wonderlands: The top 5 homes for snow-sport lovers

From a multi-million dollar penthouse to a one bedroom apartment, property hunters who enjoy a winter getaway hitting the slopes at some of Australia’s most well-known snow sports resorts are spoiled for choice.

REA Group executive manager of economics Angus Moore said while house prices in the nation’s snow regions have tracked sideways in the past year thanks to rising interest rates, these regions were coming off the back of sizeable booms during the pandemic years.

“Nationally, we’ve seen more consistent, if modest, growth in home prices this year after we saw a fall nationally at the end of last year

“This is consistent with the fact we’ve already seen a few rate cuts and are expecting to see more this year, which will help reduce mortgage costs and boost borrowing capacity.”

He noted price growth in the snow regions hadn’t deviated too far from the national trend.

“Prices in the Mansfield region – which covers Mt Buller – are up 0.4% in the past year, while prices in the Bright-Mount Beauty region – which covers Falls Creek – are down 2.8%,” he said. “That compares to a fall of 2.1% for regional Victoria as a whole in the past year.

“The Jindabyne region – which covers Thredbo – has seen prices up 1% in the past year, a bit slower than regional NSW’s growth of 2.5% over that same period,” he said.

Michelle Stynes of Forbes Stynes Real Estate, who specialises in Thredbo and Perisher Valley property, said after two really poor seasons, buyer interest in snow properties has picked up significantly this winter.

“There has definitely been a lot more activity,” she said. “This snowfall, we have actually done quite a few sales.”

Keen to snap up your very own slice of snow country? We’ve found a selection of homes just waiting for a ski lover, and some might be priced less than you would expect.

Exclusive alpine living

Described by its listing agent as the “best property he has ever seen,” this Mount Buller penthouse offers expansive never-to-be-interrupted views of Delatite Valley, The Bluff and Mt Stirling.

The property set an alpine apartment record when it was purchased off-the-plan in 2021 for almost $7m by media and tourism entrepreneur Antony Catalano.

“It is in the most exclusive building in the most exclusive location,” sales agent Zach Adams from Adams Estate Agents said.

“Nothing’s been on the market, or even built on the mountain of this sort of scale, and it’s really hard to fault this property.”

Completed two years ago, the luxurious five bedroom, five bathroom apartment is being sold fully furnished.

Designed by architects Cera Stribley, the floorplan includes several lounge areas with fireplaces, a bar, floor-to-ceiling windows and an outdoor terrace with heated slabs and a Jacuzzi.

The Penthouse 39 Summit Road, Mount Buller has an indicative price guide of $9.25 million.

Entry-level unit with sweeping views

With a cheaper price point and good snow views, the listing agent says this Thredbo unit is a good “entry option” for someone seeking a home in the locale.

“This one is really well presented and the owners have done a bit of freshening up to it since they bought it,” sales agent Dani Kell from Property Snowy Mountains said.

Set in the heart Thredbo’s Central Village, ‘Karas 8’ includes one bedroom, one bathroom, communal laundry facilities and ample ski storage, as well as a private balcony offering panoramic mountain views.

8/5 Bobuck Lane, Thredbo is priced at $510,000.

Ski-in ski-out of your private chalet

Showcasing a luxurious Alpine style, ‘Snow Elk Chalet’ in Mount Buller is a freestanding private chalet set on the edge of Bourke Street with ski-in ski-out, as well as drive-in drive-out access.

Set across four levels, sales agent Maya Balvonova from Castran Alpine said the level of detail of the four bedroom, four bathroom residence ticked all the boxes.

“It does have very special features, like the cigar room, it includes two balconies and also the view from every single side of the property, the view is just special,” she said.

“Even when you’re standing in the kitchen, you could see the ski school, you could see Mt Stirling view, Bluff view, so basically it offers expansive views across Bourke Street.”

10 White Horse Village Road, Mount Buller, Victoria is listed for sale with an indicative price guide of  $8.25 million to $9 million.

Renovated townhouse right in town

Centrally located in Jindabyne, this three bedroom townhouse at 5/3-5 Kirwan Close is the perfect alpine base, priced at $695,000.

“It’s been renovated quite tastefully, because it’s an older property…they’ve added an extra room onto it as well,” sales agent Nigel Rae from Belle Property Snowy Mountains said.

“So [it has a] new kitchen, new bathrooms, all new floorings. It presents very well.”

Mr Rae said the townhouse could also appeal to an investor keen to rent it out when they were not using it.

Family designed abode

All the hard work has been done at ‘Rileys Run,’ a freestanding chalet that has been newly renovated in Woodridge.

Located at 24 Mountain Drive, the four bedroom residence has a new garage, renovated bathrooms, as well as a separate, self-contained sound-proofed study.

Sales agent Michelle Stynes from Forbes Stynes Real Estate said the residence was large and perfect for two families, or extended families.

Ms Stynes said Woodbridge was a location she called “the family area”.

“It reminds me of the Northern Beaches and the reason I call Woodbridge sort of the Northern Beaches area is all the ski lessons start from that Woodbridge side of town,” she said.

The home is priced in the high $3 millions. Picture: realestate.com.au

“The pool and the gym are all available for the kids, so they can basically get themselves to the hill.

“It’s a flat walk to the ski run from this particular house, and basically it’s a few hundred metres, it’s not far at all.”

The property is priced in the high $3 millions.
