Warrandyte icon: Beasley’s Nursery hits the market

Beasley's Nursery, 195 Heidelberg-Warrandyte Rd,, Warrandyte - for herald sun real estate

The Beasley family have operated their nursery since the 1970s. It started as a stall before moving to 195 Heidelberg-Warrandyte Rd, Warrandyte.

A well-known nursery and cafe in Melbourne’s north east has hit the market for the first time in five decades.

Beasley’s Nursery at 195 Heidelberg-Warrandyte Rd, Warrandyte, near Doncaster East, is expected to sell for more than $2.8m.

Founded by Ron and Merle Beasley and their two sons, Bill and Neil, the nursery began as a stall in the early 1970s.

The family sold ferns to their neighbours and passers-by from the side of Warrandyte Rd and their backyard before establishing the 10,730sq m centre.

Beasley’s has since become a local icon, winning an Australia’s Best Garden Centre gong in 1995.

The family has now made the decision to retire and is offering the site for sale with vacant possession.

It features a man-made waterfall, showroom, offices and plant display areas, plus an on-site cafe.

According to the property’s online listing, it offers buyers a number options including “to continue its legacy or to capitalise on the land, location and existing improvements to reinvent/redevelop the site for the next generation”.

Gorman Commercial’s Tom Maule and Dean Alexander have the listing, with JACX Property acting as the transaction manager.

Mr Maule said the owner of a nursery or similar business could take over the site, while it would also likely suit a hospitality business or aged care operator.

“And then there has been some interest from some residential development angles,” Mr Maule said.

The nursery is located in a low density residential zone and is close to a Manningham Council-operated carpark with space for 100 vehicles.

The 10,730sq m site is close to the intersection of Heidelberg-Warrandyte Rd and Anderson Creek Rd, allowing easy access via the nearby Blackburn Rd to the Eastern Freeway.

The teahouse was added to the nursery in the 1980s.

It’s also near to parks, playgrounds and the Yarra and Mullum Mullum walking and cycling trails.

Mr Alexander said the nursery would continue operating until it was sold.

The nursery has hosted a few weddings across its years of operation, he added.

Expressions of interest close at 2pm on September 2.
