For generations, the Australian dream home was largely defined by size, status and street appeal. But in 2026, that ideal is being rewritten.

Buyers are no longer chasing the biggest floor plan or the glossiest façade — they’re looking for homes that feel calm, crafted and personal. 

Few understand this shift better than Charlotte Wilson, Senior Interior Designer at acclaimed architecture and design studio SJB. 

Wilson says buyers now want spaces that nurture their everyday lives rather than showcase them. 

“It’s really important that design is timeless and that we make homes feel bespoke and personal,” she says. 
“We want people to feel at home — and not feel the need to change the design every time a new trend comes along.”

Design-led living: Form that feels good

This is design-led living — a movement towards spaces that are intimate, tactile and thoughtful.

In contrast to minimalist apartments that focus on external views, today’s homes are designed from the inside out, prioritising how each room feels and functions. 

“It might be some feature joinery, natural timbers or beautiful stone tiles,” says Wilson. 
“You want the space to have personality. Your home should feel like your sanctuary.”

Showroom to sanctuary

The perfect home now feels lived-in, layered and personal — not like a display suite.

As buyers tune in to what genuinely makes them happy, they’re choosing character and comfort over perfection. 

That might mean swapping stark white walls for colour and texture, or mixing sentimental furniture with modern design.

“You can have a lovely neutral backdrop, then add in warmer, cooler or bolder tones,” Wilson explains.

“If you’re a downsizer and want to keep your furniture, you can still bring it along — it will still work with the interior design.” 

Design features such as stone island benches or built-in shelving to display favourite items strike the balance between style and day-to-day life.

“You want to feel like you can hang your favourite art and it just works,” she adds.

“Or create a small moment — a vase of flowers beneath a pendant — that elevates the space.”

How Rozelle Village brings it to life

These ideas have been brought to life at Rozelle Village, a new residential opportunity in Sydney’s inner west where SJB designed every apartment with the feeling of home at its core. 

Wilson says the sense of belonging begins the moment you walk through the door.

“You have a proper little hallway where you can put your side table and keys before you journey into the rest of the home,” she says. 

Each layout has been carefully considered for comfort and connection, from seamless indoor–outdoor flow to flexible living zones.

“We want everyone to feel like they’ve personally gone to a designer and ended up with a beautifully considered apartment that truly feels like home.”

Quiet luxury in every detail 

This approach embodies quiet luxury — understated design that’s rich in detail and warmth. 

Think solid travertine stone tiles in kitchens and bathrooms, or timber joinery in wardrobes and shelving that adds depth and texture.

“With the stone, we’ve elevated these spaces to make them feel bespoke,” Wilson says. 

“In the showers, we’ve used two marbles in a chequerboard pattern — it’s luxurious but playfully unexpected.”

Other touches — LED pendant lighting, large mirrored cabinets, and premium tapware and handles — create subtle moments of delight.

“As designers, we caught up with PERIFA (the developers) after the display suite launched,” she says.

“We stood around the kitchen island and all said, ‘Wow, this already feels like a home.’”

A village for the future 

Because the ultimate dream home isn’t just about interiors — it’s about belonging. 

Rozelle Village sits in the heart of Rozelle, known for its thriving cafés, local businesses and creative spirit. 
Wilson says the development will only add to that energy.

“There’s a real sense of community within the building — with shared spaces, local retail and cafes, it’s going to be quite an amazing place,” she says. 

Developed by PERIFA in partnership with Mitsubishi Estate Asia, Rozelle Village offers one- to three-bedroom apartments and penthouses, with the display suite now open.
