Has anyone in Block history every taken a pasting with as much good cheer as Mat and Robby?

The best mates from Adelaide’s drunken choice of a dark striped fabric for their self-upholstered bedhead has well and truly come home to roost, the judges united in horror around it when they stepped into the second of the pair’s two kids’ bedrooms.

“Oh boys, what have you done?” was Shaynna’s reaction.

“Oh, you’re kidding me. It looks like an up-market nursing home,” was Marty’s assessment.

“The mood is meh and ‘I need to have a little bit of a lie down’,” Darren said.

“And I may not wake up,” Marty added.

Shaynna’s reaction to the boys’ bedhead says it all.

Other contestants would have fled weeping at this triple barrelled assault, but last week’s winners Mat and Robby were doubled in laughter over at their sudden demotion.

“We’re serving high end retirement realness and Cheryl, Beryl and Meryl will be frothing to get their hands on this condo,” Mat said later.

The bedhead of doom brought nothing but ridicule to Mat and Robby.

The judges found much to like about Mat and Robby’s second kids’ bedroom, but not enough to cancel the effects of the bedhead monstrosity in their other room.

Equally adept at laughing the face of crisis, Emma and Ben’s relationship barely missed a beat when they discovered engineer Ben had mismeasured one of their bedrooms to the tune of an entire metre, meaning their wallpaper didn’t fit.

“Babe, I’m so annoyed at you,” Emma raged mildly, before the pair dissolved in giggles.

They solved the issue by putting temporary panelling on either side, but the judges noted that means the wardrobes didn’t open properly.

“That one detail has ruined how the room functions,” Marty said.

And given there’s $175,000 worth of appliances up for grabs along with the usual $10,000 this week, that one detail was a costly one.

“Do you hate me now?” Ben asked.

Nope. Emma was still smiling.

Britt and Taz cleverly hid their mismeasured wallpaper with timber panelling, which then stopped the wardrobes from opening properly.

Ben and Emma’s boys’ room was a big hit with Shaynna and Darren.

Sonny and Alicia weren’t. After Sonny slapped paint on like he was in a fist fight, Alicia had it with him and unleashed a day long swear fest, as well as some epic stink eyes as the judges’ criticism about their sloppy execution was read out.

The judges loved her choice of wallpaper – blue tartan for their boys’ room and pink for their girl’s room. They also loved the gallery-style hang of equestrian artwork on the blue wallpaper, seemingly forgetting that an almost identical concept was presented by Sarah-Jane and Tom on The Block Sunbury three years ago.

The judges did take issue with a boring facing wall with a small TV though.

“There’s nothing worse than a TV just stuck on a wall like you’re in a bad motel,” Shaynna noted.

Their other beef was that the room was too grown up.

Sonny and Alicia were unrepentant.

“I know the brief was a kids’ room, but we want to sell our house. You can put a kid in any room,” Sonny said.

The judges loved Sonny and Alicia’s girl’s room – if only it had been a room for a girl and not a grown up.

Sonny and Alicia’s choice of artworks and wallpaper got ticks from the judges, but not the bare boring wall in front of it.

Can and Han managed to finish this week, and the judges were impressed with their colour schemes (with Shaynna declaring it Wes Anderson-esque) and their dreamy bedheads, but as predicted, their choice of floorboards over concrete slab instead of carpet saw them lose points.

Shaynna also thought they were trying to do too much in the room they created as a nursery, urging them to edit their choices back.

“It’s overwhelming,” she said.

The judges thought Han and Can’s nursery was trying to do too much.

Shaynna Blaze said she got Wes Anderson vibes from Han and Can’s colour scheme and styling.

In the end, it was Britt and Taz who took out the win, thanks to a 3D wall inspired by the rolling hills around Daylesford and their clever use of space in both rooms, which left plenty of space to access wardrobes.

Shaynna lauded Britt’s styling, comparing it to Steph and Gian’s from two seasons ago.

Then she ended with a backhanded compliment that saw both cops and the state of WA copping strays.

“These guys have class. And they’re two police officers from the dusty bowl of Western Australia!”

Judges found it hard to fault Britt and Taz’ boys’ room.

A boldly coloured 3D bed head inspired by the rolling hills of Daylesford cinched Britt and Taz the win.
