Block foreman Dan opens up on heartbreaking loss

Tonight’s episode began with heartbreak, when foreman Dan and his partner (and fellow former Block contestant Dani) addressed the daily morning meeting of contestants and tradies.

The pair opened up about the devastating loss of their 10-day old baby girl Billie in December last year, after complications during her birth.

“We only got to spend 10 days with our beautiful girl and we’re very grateful for those 10 days her time was spent in the NICU department at the Women’s Hospital in Melbourne,” Dan said as contestants wept.

Dan and Dani tell the contestants and crew about their devastating loss.

In response to this devastation, Dan and Dani have started Billie’s Besties to raise money and awareness, with proceeds going to Melbourne’s Royal Women’s Newborn Intensive Care Unit.

“It’s now our primary mission in life to make sense out of this, and support those who supported us,” Dani said.

Britt and Alicia are moved by Dan and Dani’s story.

Trivial as it felt after this sadness, it was then on to the first open for inspections of The Block 2025, in which contestants get to see their rivals’ rooms.

Dan and Dani have turned terrible heartbreak into action.

It’s only been a week, so there was no backbiting or snide remarks, just lots of oohing and ahhing, and in particular, defence of Han and Can’s bathroom.

Beyond the fact it was unfinished, the judges also questioned the couple’s styling and colour choices, but their fellow constants described it as “lovely” (Emma), “stunning” (Britt), “beautiful” (Mat) and having “so many positives” (Alicia).

Emma and Ben are moved to give Han and Can a pep talk after their visit, but seeing the other bathrooms still had Can walking out to have a private sob.

“I had to take a minute to walk out because I was just feeling overwhelmed that everyone had done so well and I felt it was my fault we were in such a bad position,” she said.

Then there was lots of foreshadowing that the pair might be about to pile mistakes on mistakes, with their plan to continue the curved theme criticised by the judges in the rest of the house, and a decision to have hardwood floors in the bedrooms, despite Daylesford being freezing in winter.

The Block is beginning to take a toll on Can.

Teams are this week creating two children’s bedrooms, something Mat and Robby take issue with.

“Nobody in Daylesford has kids – it’s gays and retirees,” Mat declared, a stereotype that was backed up by the pair’s real estate agent.

“People with kids aren’t buying multimillion dollar houses in Daylesford,” she agreed.

Mat and Robby sensibly resolve to style their rooms as kids’ rooms, but without any built-in bunks or cartoon wallpaper so they can be easily converted to adult guest rooms.

All contestants except Han and Can then went to choose plush carpet for the rooms.

Freezing Taz, who’s longing for the 46-degree temperatures of his hometown of Newman in WA said “down here you don’t want to be stepping on to tiles when you get out of bed”, but Can is adamant her choice of oak parquetry with some rugs is the right one.

“We just don’t like carpet. We find it quite old and unnecessary,” she said.

Affable besties Robby and Mat then displayed their hidden Machiavellian side.

They’d received final approval for their secret wine cellar, along with a hefty discount for materials thanks to sponsors wanting to be involved.

They’re still going to need to come up with $43,000 to pay for it, and they’re desperate that no other contestants catch wind of their plan in time to copy them.

Robby called a snap body corporate meeting designed to have everyone agree not to allow their tradies to visit other houses and share intel about what other contestants are doing.

Sonny immediately ran with the ball, making it seem like it was his idea all along.

“There’s no reason for anyone’s tradies to go there. It’s not fair. I don’t want to know what you’re doing, I want to worry about ourselves,” he said, to universal agreement, distracting anyone from wondering why Robby and Mat even raised the issue.

Sonny unwittingly becomes the perfect stooge for Mat and Robby.
