Terrific Tynwald: 1830s estate with 10 bedrooms could be yours

No.1 Tynwald Rd, New Norfolk is for sale with EIS Property.

Tynwald is a historic estate that offers a rare glimpse into Tasmania’s colonial past.

EIS Property senior property consultant, Deb Stephens, described Tynwald as an extraordinary heritage property and a “cherished family home”.

Ms Stephens said this Heritage Listed property had been held by only five owners.

“For the current owners, it has been a love story. She fell head over heels for Tynwald,” Ms Stephens said.

“The original main part of the home is a showcase of Georgian architecture from the 1830s, then in the 1890s it was modernised with a Victorian veranda, tower, bay windows and iron lacework added on by politician, William Moore.

“Last time it was on the market, Tynwald was on a smaller acreage than it is now. By adding to its size, the owners have ensured the privacy of their property.

“And alongside the beautiful home there is a historic mill built in the 1820s. A single-bedroom cottage was historically used for grain storage for the mill, and more recently for short-stay accommodation.”

Perfectly described as one of the state’s most significant historical and architectural properties, Tynwald rests on over 4.5ha of land on the riverside just 30-minutes from Hobart.

From a large family residence to a bed and breakfast establishment, this sprawling mansion has worn many hats over its near two-century existence.

The main residence spans 463sq m across three levels and accommodates up to nine bedrooms and seven bathrooms, four of which are ensuites.

Original Georgian architectural elements remain intact throughout the property, including soaring ceilings, timber fireplaces, ornate staircase balustrades, pressed tin ceilings and period stained-glass windows.

Ms Stephens said recent restoration work has integrated modern amenities while preserving the building’s historic character.

“They have completed some beautiful restoration work through most of the interior of the home,” she said.

“Floor coverings, drapes, new paint; the quality is beautiful, it is stunning.

“It is light and spacious with a flexible floorplan.

“And the Derwent River is right in front of your home, you can walk to the water’s edge in Just minutes.

“Visiting Tynwald feels like you have walked into the past.

“Buyers for properties like this are seeking something with rich history and character. Something unique and special.”

Tynwald was built by John and Martha Terry.

In October 1818, the Terrys and their eight daughters and three sons sailed from Sheerness, England on the Surrey, the only “free” settlers on a convict ship to Sydney.

Terry moved his family and business to Van Diemen’s Land the following year.

Two millstones that the family brought with them from England were used in the Lachlan River Mill.

Today, adjacent to the main residence stands The Granary, a self-contained cottage that originally functioned as a grain store for the 1822 watermill.

Terry’s Mill is recognised as one of Tasmania’s earliest watermills.

While partially intact, the mill’s stone foundations and structural elements have been incorporated into the property’s garden landscape, serving as a tangible connection to the area’s industrial heritage.

The estate’s commercial potential stems from its previous operation as a licensed restaurant and bed and breakfast.

Most recently, it has been a family home, but subject to approvals, it is easy to imagine it as a commercial offering once again.

The property retains a commercial kitchen, cool room, and flagstone-floored breakfast room capable of serving up to 25 guests.

The dining facilities and grounds have hosted weddings, anniversaries and private events.

Current amenities include an in-ground swimming pool and the framework of a tennis court requiring restoration.

The extensive grounds provide space for agricultural pursuits, with established vegetable and fruit gardens already in place.

“Tynwald awaits. Write your next chapter here,” Ms Stephens said.

No.1 Tynwald Rd, New Norfolk is listed for sale with EIS Property. It is priced at “Offers over $2.8m”.
