Templestowe: Elevated home on stilts sells for $1.35m

The house at 39 Lawanna Drive, Templestowe, sits among the treetops.

A Templestowe house that rises 7.5m above the ground to reach the surrounding treetops soared to a $1.35m sale on Saturday.

The sum was $250,000 above expectations, with the 966sq m property listed for $1m-$1.1m.

Jellis Craig Doncaster’s Chris Savvides said the result had delighted the owner, whose architect father built the home at 39 Lawanna Drive more than three decades ago.

The abode rests upon a lower-ground garage and several Karri timber stilts.

Visitors can enjoy green views from the wraparound jarrah decking suspended on a steel frame, with the rear balcony rising to just below 8m in height.

Saturday marked the first time the home had gone under the hammer since its construction in the 1990s.

Mr Savvides said about 120 groups had inspected the house during the sales campaign, while a crowd of 50 or so people watched it go under the hammer.

The house is close to schools, parks, the Westfield Doncaster shopping centre and Templestowe Village.

Three bidders contested the auction, with the residence placed on the market at the $1.1m mark.

“It sold for $1.35m to a young couple,” Mr Savvides said.

“They love the basement – he is a carpenter so he can do work around the house – and she is planning to operate a business from the home.”

He said the buyers had previously looked at more than 50 homes and bid on a handful before securing the Templestowe residence.

“They are rapt that they got this,” Mr Savvides said.

“And a lot of the neighbours were really happy to see some young people buy and make it their own.”

The three-bedroom house features a kitchen fitted with a new electric wall oven, a gas cooktop, dishwasher and walk-in pantry.

There is also a large pond in the garden and a four-car garage and workshop with a sink, three-phase power connection and roller doors.

Mr Savvides said there was currently “huge demand” for properties priced in the $1m to $2m range at the same time as there was a lack of stock for sale.

The trend has been observed by both him and his colleagues across the Manningham municipality and Melbourne’s eastern suburbs.
