Premiership hero Nick Malceski lists Coast family home

Nick Malceski and wife Laura are selling their Gold Coast home

AFL hall of famer Nick Malceski and wife Laura have listed their beachside family home as the ex-Gold Coast Suns player returns to the Swans.

The couple is taking the beautifully renovated five-bedroom property at 26 Portobello Dr, Mermaid Beach to auction, with Malceski leaving his role as a development coach with the Suns to become Sydney’s VFL head coach.

It’s a bittersweet move for the Malceskis as they leave behind the house they transformed from a tired 1990s build into a Cape Cod-inspired “forever home”. The couple has two children, Anae, 10, and Harry, 12.

“It’s an exciting time for us,” Ms Malceski said.

“We met in Sydney when Nick was drafted to the Swans and spent 10 years there, and now we’ve been on the Gold Coast for 10 years, but it is a career opportunity and we are trying to embrace the change.”

The property is marketed by Pezet Matheson agent, Mitchell Lambert.

Malceski, 41, debuted with the Swans in 2005, playing 176 games over ten seasons in Sydney, including the 2012 premiership where he kicked the winning goal against Hawthorn in the Grand Final.

Inducted into the Swan’s Hall of Fame, he played two seasons at Gold Coast in 2015-16 before joining the club’s coaching panel.

Their double-storey home, located in a gated community, was a “passion project” and the couple’s third local renovation.

Records show they paid $960,000 for the 763 sqm property in 2019, installing a stunning kitchen with stone-topped island bench, shaker cabinetry and double ovens. Every room was renovated with high-end fixtures and finishes.

A spacious entertaining terrace — complete with TV for footy nights — overlooks the pool, while a sauna, ice bath and fire pit complete the outdoor offering.

Ms Malceski, a healthcare industry consultant, said the house was in a “pretty deplorable condition” when they first bought it but “had good bones”.

“Structurally, it was a very good build, it just needed upgrading which we could do while still maintaining the character of the home.

“Our main focus was creating a flow between indoors and outdoors and the kitchen was central to that.

“This project was done with a lot of love and the intent that it was to be our forever home and that is reflected in its quality — it was never a quick spec,” she said.

Mr Lambert said the listing offered a unique opportunity to purchase a free-standing house within the secure family-friendly community of Paradise Quays.

“These sellers have been kicking goals on and off the football field,” he said.

“The home is perfect for a growing family. It has a beautiful pool and the living and kitchen area is just epic in its design.

“There are so many tailwinds for the Gold Coast property market, with huge migration from the southern states and an interest rate cut on the table for Melbourne Cup pushing up demand.”

Ms Malceski said they were yet to secure a new home in Sydney, but looking around the Eastern Suburbs with the intent to settle on another renovator by Christmas.

“Sydney is at a completely different end of the spectrum to the Gold Coast lifestyle but we will be back for many visits,” she said.

PropTrack data shows house prices in Mermaid Waters were up 10.5 per cent over the past year to a median of $2m.
