Northcote’s $6m record-holding art gallery house hits market

The home at 5 Ross St, Northcote, holds the suburb’s house price record.

A striking art gallery-style Northcote house which holds the suburb’s $6m price record is ready for a new owner.

The four-bedroom home at 5 Ross St, described as one of the area’s most remarkable residences, last sold in 2022.

The residence, featuring a distinctive facade crafted from aluminium battens, a cranked-steel staircase and an entertainer’s deck with a barbecue kitchen and a heated pool, has been listed with a $5.5m-$6m range this time around.

Nelson Alexander partner Charlie Barham said the house was designed by Ola Architecture Studio with the build completed in 2017.

“It’s rare to see a home of this scale and sculptural quality in Northcote,” Mr Barham said.

“The sense of volume, amazing natural light and precision detailing give it a bold presence that has so much genuine wow factor.”

An architect designed the home around the original owners’ “love of stark materiality and clean aesthetics”, Mr Barham added.

“The intention was to create a minimalist backdrop that could function almost like a gallery for their art collection — a space where the architecture and artwork could quietly complement one another.”

The home was designed to showcase an art collection.

The downstairs living area boasts high ceilings, floor-to-ceiling windows and the cranked-steel staircase, a type of staircase with an angled beam to support its steps.

“The owners have commented on the abundant natural light that fills the space, afternoons spent swimming in the pool during summer, and the warmth of the fire on a chilly winter’s day,” Mr Barham said.

“They also love the location, commenting that it feels incredibly central while still being surrounded by beautiful trees, giving a real sense of escape.”

The Northcote home’s online listing describes it as “a contemporary triumph that stands as one of the suburb’s most remarkable residences”.

The Merri Creek Trail at the end of the street is a bonus and the house is within walking distance of Westgarth Village, Queens Pde’s shops and cafes, and the Edinburgh Gardens.

In the kitchen, there’s a concrete-clad island bench, concealed butler’s pantry and Gaggenau, Siemens and Miele appliances.

Upstairs, the main bedroom is accompanied by a walk-in wardrobe and ensuite, plus two other bedrooms, a second living room and central bathroom.

An additional bonus is the abode’s sustainability credentials such as hydronic heating, solar panels, double glazing, a solar power system and passive solar orientation.

The house is close to High St’s cafes and shops and Merri Creek trails, and is zoned for Northcote High School.

A diverse mix of buyers have inspected the residence.

“We’ve had inner-north families looking to upsize, some from just a few hundred metres south in Fitzroy North and Clifton Hill, who recognise the value this level of design would command in that suburb,” Mr Barham said.

“There’s also been interest from downsizers relocating from the other side of town, to be closer to family in the north, seeking a home that still offers size, scale and architectural presence, but is low-maintenance in comparison to more period homes.”

Expressions of interest close at 5pm on Tuesday, November 11.
