New Oakden home auction to support SA children’s charities

Buying a home can be a life-changing experience, but this one will help change the lives of others.

Just ask Glenn Fuller of Backpacks 4 SA Kids, one of the six SA charities set to benefit from the sale of The Advertiser Foundation’s Good Home at 24 Bluegum Way, Oakden, which hits the auction block at 11am Saturday.

The organisation provides backpacks of essential items to help to relieve some of the stress and anxiety children face when they are removed from their family, often leaving with just the clothes on their backs.

“The backpack gives them something that makes them feel worthy,” he said.

“We run purely on donation – it’s community supporting community, and that’s beautiful to see.

“Through us 6000 kids a year will get a backpack, but through everything we do, we probably look after 15,000 kids a year.

“There are a lot of people out there caring, and wanting to help with an issue going on in, really, their own backyards.

The house and land have been donated by Weeks Homes and Villawood Properties, with the entire sale price of the fully-furnished, move-in ready home to be shared evenly among Backpacks 4 SA Kids and five other childrens organisations – the Childhood Cancer Association, KickStart for Kids, the Sammy D Foundation, the Women’s & Children’s Hospital Foundation’s family support program and Channel 7 Children’s Research Foundation with Raising Literacy Australia.

Deputy chair of The Advertiser Foundation Kids Appeal Penny Fowler described The Good Home initiative as “a wonderful example of what can be achieved when businesses take the lead in making meaningful change for communities”.
