Nancy Bird Walton’s former home sells for close to $10m

27-29 Boomerang St, Turramurra has sold for close to $10m.

The one-time Turramurra home of pioneering aviator the late Nancy Bird Walton has sold for close to $10m to a Sydney family.

Nancy was only 19 when she became Australia’s first female pilot and she famously flew doctors into regional communities, earning her the moniker of Angel of the Outback. Sydney’s second airport, opening next year, is named after her and she was declared an Australian Living Treasure in 1997.

When she was aged in her sixties and seventies, she lived in Wongola, a five-bedroom estate on more than 2600sqm of land in Boomerang St.

The historic home has been beautifully renovated by the current vendors.

The historic home was renovated by Telstra senior executive David Burns and Edwina Burns who love breathing new life into old homes.

The pair bought the home in 2021 for $7.875m and it was set down for auction in September.

The agents say that the new owners are a family from the city.

“Well-presented properties are still popular”.

A month later the sold sign has gone up and although agents Tim Fraser, of Di Jones, and Harriet France, of Sotheby’s were not free to comment on the sale it is believed the 1927 house sold in the vicinity of its auction guide.

The agents did say that the new owners were a family from the city who had been looking for a big home close to schools.

“The market is patchy and there is a lot more stock available but well-presented properties are still popular,” Fraser said.
