Inside Oakden’s new energy-efficient luxury charity home

The Advertiser Foundation’s Good Home at 24 Bluegum Way, Oakden hits the auction block on November 1, with the house and land having been donated by Weeks Homes and Villawood Properties.

Weeks Homes design manager Michael Morris said aside from being luxurious, it had also been carefully designed to maximise energy efficiency – particularly important during a cost-of-living crisis.

“Everything is powered by electricity, so we’ve put a solar system on the roof, an electric heat pump system which is efficient to run, we’ve got an EV charger for an electric car and we’ve got battery storage too,” he said.

“Costs are scary for many. What that electricity bill going to be like in October/November as opposed to January/February? That fluctuation in pricing could be detrimental to their budget.

“Here those bills should only be very small if not non-existent from quarter to quarter, and that’s the benefit of this design, and it takes a lot of stress away from families.”

Mr Morris said it was certainly not your average show home, with the home complete with three-phase power supply, R6.0 ceiling insulation, LED mirrors, ducted reverse-cycle airconditioning and blockout roller blinds.

“It’s a really stable environment – it generally stays at about 21-22-degrees – and you’re really only using your airconditioner on those really cold days and really hot days,” he said.

“Everyone here is really proud of it.”

Set just 9km from the CBD, the home offers further cost savings to buyers through enviable lifestyle amenities, including access to the exclusive residents’ club with gym, pool, cafe and function spaces; as well as free walking trails, playgrounds and leafy parklands.

The entire sale price of the fully-furnished, move-in ready home will be shared evenly by six kids organisations – the Childhood Cancer Association, Backpacks 4 SA Kids, KickStart for Kids, the Sammy D Foundation, the Women’s & Children’s Hospital Foundation’s family support program and Channel 7 Children’s Research Foundation with Raising Literacy Australia.
