Initially purchased by John Purton in 1898, the property included brickworks that supplied materials for the home and a local hotel.

The Purton family — who had owned the property for 44 years — cultivated a large orchard on the property before selling it to the Ewington family in 1942.

The house later served as the Gawler General Post Office.

A rotunda was moved from a war memorial and placed against the end of the home’s veranda for use as the post office.

The property was given the Belle View name, inspired by the lovely view of the sea from its backyard at the time.
