Diane Keaton’s former Beverly Hills estate hits market at $38m

A Beverly Hills residence, painstakingly restored by the late Hollywood legend Diane Keaton, has been listed for a staggering $38m (US$25m).

The listing comes just weeks after the beloved “Annie Hall” star passed away from pneumonia at 79.

The iconic property, once gracing the cover of Architectural Digest, was acquired by Keaton in 2007 for $12.4m (US$8.1m) from another of its illustrious former owners: pop superstar Madonna.

Following her purchase of the six-bedroom, nine-bathroom abode, Keaton dedicated years to meticulously refurbishing the estate, painstakingly reviving many of the original Spanish Colonial design elements.

While the home, originally conceived by renowned architect Ralph Flewelling and nestled in the prestigious Beverly Hills Flats precinct, has since seen a succession of owners, including “American Horror Story” creator Ryan Murphy, many of Keaton’s distinctive touches remain evident today.

“Diane was one of the most prolific architectural and design minds that we’ve ever seen in the real estate community,” listing agent Rayni Williams, of Beverly Hills Estates told the New York Post.

“There are only a very small handful of people that had her aesthetic.”

Ms Williams, who is marketing the property alongside her husband, Branden Williams, highlighted the entryway as one of the most quintessential Keaton spaces.

She transformed it into an elegant library, a testament to her profound love of literature.

“You walk into the foyer, which is a library with seating area and you’re really enveloped in Diane’s energy because it greets you and that’s untouched,” Williams added.

“She loved books and she loved to read … you feel her very much, her heart and soul, immediately.”

This remarkable room also features a large, inspiring quote encircling the space just above the bookshelves: “The eye sees what the mind knows.”

Throughout the residence, Keaton’s design prowess is evident in numerous living zones, particularly the kitchen.

Here, she masterfully blended signature Spanish Revival elements with an airy farmhouse aesthetic, resulting in a room that feels both expansive and inviting.

The main living area boasts vaulted ceilings with original timber beams and an enormous stone fireplace that adds warmth and depth.

Large windows ensure an abundance of natural light floods the space.

For those who relish entertaining, the home offers two distinct dining areas: a formal dining room with timber ceilings and elegant Spanish-inspired light fixtures, and a more casual seating area conveniently located within the kitchen.

Embracing California’s celebrated indoor/outdoor architectural style, the formal dining room features grand French doors that open onto a charming courtyard.

This outdoor oasis provides a spacious seating area for relaxation, soaking up the sun, or enjoying alfresco dining.

The courtyard is further enhanced by several trees and a Spanish-style fountain at its centre, with the home gracefully encircling this tranquil outdoor space.

At the rear of the property, a verdant patch of lawn houses another water feature, overlooking the sparkling pool and spa.

This area also includes a separate guesthouse and a sports court.

In total, the property spans just under half an acre (approximately 2,000 square metres), with the main residence covering nearly 8,500 square feet (approximately 790 square metres).

This dwelling is the latest example of Keaton’s renowned home-flipping expertise to enter the market in recent months.

Diane Keaton in her final Insta post

It follows in the footsteps of her so-called “House That Pinterest Built,” which was listed for $44.5m (US$29m) just seven months before her passing.

That property was withdrawn from the market weeks before her death and remains unlisted.

That “Pinterest” home is understood to have been one of the last major renovation projects the actress completed, finalised in 2017 after a three-year restoration.

Before that, Keaton spent many years moving from property to property, targeting historic homes that had fallen into disrepair.

She would typically spend a few years renovating these estates before listing them for sale and moving on to her next project, admitting in an interview with Wine Spectator that she always struggled to “land and stay” because she could never find an abode that felt truly perfect.

However, that changed with her final renovation endeavour, which she affectionately described as her “dream home.”

“Something’s right, because I love it,” she said of the Sullivan Canyon dwelling.
