Australia has its first ‘sky garage’ – but it won’t be the last

In ultra-luxe apartments in cities around the world, the ultimate amenity for car collectors is a sky garage. But no Australian building has boasted this extravagant feature – until now.

What if you could access your car right from the heart of your new apartment?

Forget trekking to the basement car park. Within luxury apartments, a sky garage gives homeowners the convenience of accessing their car from inside their home by using a high-tech elevator lift.

It eliminates the need for a traditional basement or ground-level parking for vehicles, instead using a car elevator to transport the car and its owner to a private and integrated garage within their apartment.

The concept takes a simple mode of transportation and transforms it into the ultimate status symbol for car lovers, turning expansive apartments into showrooms for the homeowner’s priciest assets.

It’s the kind of futuristic amenity you might expect from a James Bond movie or even the Batcave, but the concept has been popularised across the world by various developers.

The Porsche Design Tower in Miami is perhaps one of the most famous examples.

The tower’s “Dezervator” is a glass car elevator that transports residents and their cars to their apartments. Standing at 195 metres tall, the development features 132 apartments, each with their own private sky garage.

Further north in New York City, 200 Eleventh Avenue was one of the first developments in the city to include sky garages, with the feature enjoyed by the likes of Nicole Kidman and Keith Urban, who are among the residents of this elite building.

In Singapore, Hamilton Scotts is another development utilising the amenity with a system that lifts cars directly to a glass-enclosed garage next to the living area of each apartment.

Now in Melbourne, Growland has brought this extreme status symbol to Australia with Neue Grand, a new apartment complex that delivers big on luxury features.

Located on St Kilda Road, Neue Grand has 18 full-floor residences with uninterrupted views over the city skyline and Port Phillip Bay.

Each apartment comes with its own sky garage.

According to the developer, the design and technology is the first of its kind in the southern hemisphere. Here, the concept is a German-engineered parking system that transfers each vehicle from the basement level, directly into private residences via a high-speed lift.

These sky garages have an automated sliding mechanism that moves the vehicle into place within the apartment.

The design also enables two vehicles to be displayed within the glass encased space, adjacent to the lounge.

Another nod to its luxury, each of Neue Grand’s 335sqm residences feature natural stone, timber, leather and custom detailing. Each home can also be privately accessed through a secure lift lobby.

Neue Grand finished construction in April 2025 and has five remaining residences on offer.

While Neue Grand might be drawing attention to this unique garage feature, it’s not the only new development that has recognised the appeal.

In Brisbane, another development is set to feature sky garages. Spyre Group’s Moray House in New Farm is a limited collection of six apartments sitting along the Brisbane River.

The development has two apartments with this luxurious feature. Residents will be able to pull in from Moray Street, enter a remote-controlled car lift, and drive into their garage in their apartments.

“The sky garage will appeal to luxury vehicle enthusiasts who want privacy as well as the additional security of garaging their car in their apartment rather than using regular basement parking,” Spyre Group director Andrew Malouf said.

These may be the first new builds to incorporate the feature, but will the trend catch on? Melbourne and Brisbane have jumped on the sky garage bandwagon.

Already, a new Sydney development has embraced the idea of putting your car on display in the dining room. At Villia in Rose Bay, two apartments offer the ability to drive into a private glass garage that looks down into the residence. Not quite a sky garage, but a car in the sky nonetheless.
