AFL legend Simon Madden’s historic Essendon house fetches $2.75m

Former Bomber Simon Madden and his wife Mary have sold their house at 2 Edward St, Essendon.

Bombers legend Simon Madden and wife Mary are set to farewell their Essendon house of four decades after it fetched $2.75m at auction on Saturday.

According to realestate.com.au’s research arm PropTrack, the state recorded a preliminary 66.6 per cent clearance rate from 815 early results this week.

A 19-season veteran who won the 1985 Norm Smith Medal, Madden is regarded as one of the AFL’s greatest ever ruckmen.

Madden played with Essendon from 1974 to 1992, captained the team for two years and won four club best and fairest awards.

He later served as an Essendon director and AFL Players Association director in addition to running his own consulting firm.

Madden previously told the Herald Sun that he and Mary were downsizing from the Edwardian-era house at 2 Edward St where they had raised their four children.

The house, named Ballanee, has been renovated and extended in sympathy with its historic character.

The house is within walking distance of Windy Hill.

McDonald Upton’s Paul McDonald said the residence, listed with a $2.6m-$2.86m range, sold to a family with children who loved its location and architecture.

“It was the right size for them and the husband works in the city and can take the train in,”

“It was sold by a really nice family and it sold to a really nice family.”

The home initially passed in on a $2.5m vendor bid but sold shortly afterwards to the buyers, who approached Mr McDonald following the auction.

New listings in the Victorian capital increased by 29.5 per cent across the month, while the state’s regional listings climbed 31.8 per cent as the spring selling season peaked.

Across the past 12 months, new Melbourne listings grew by 2 per cent while regional listings fell 1.3 per cent.
