A home to crow about going under the hammer

A luxury beachfront property has hit the Darwin property market with a unique inclusion not normally found on land.

The architecturally designed home at 30 Martin Cres, Coconut Grove, comes with beach access, sunset views and, unusually, a crow’s nest.

The owners bought the property 15 years ago after impulsively deciding to check it out.

“When we bought the home we weren’t actually planning to move, but we had always loved the street so we popped in to see the house,” one of the owners said.

“It needed a lot of work but we could just see the potential and we loved all the amazing views.”

Her husband said the crow’s nest was added during a 2020 renovation.

“It was a joint decision but I was particularly keen,” he said.

“It was (born from) a desire to really enjoy the magnificent views over the ocean – the views are spectacular from up there.”

He said the elevated platform could comfortably accommodate two or three people sitting and about eight people standing.

“It’s a great place for coffee in the morning and a G and T at sunset,” he said.

“We love the peaceful, relaxing setting (watching) the coming and going of the tide and being able to see across East Point and Charles Point and beyond out to sea.”

Since owning the Martin Cres home, the couple completed two renovations, one in 2011/12 and one in 2020, that saw the bathrooms, kitchen, bedrooms and balcony area upgraded, plus the grounds were landscaped after Cyclone Marcus.

Post-renovation, the property won the 2020 HIA NT Home of the Year award and the 2020 National Master Builders Association Alterations/Additions award.

One of the owners said while the home was incredible, the location was unmatched.

“You can go out the back gate onto absolute ocean frontage and walk through the mangroves onto sandflats,” she said.

“You’re surrounded by wildlife but only a few minutes from the city.”

Her husband said the property was like a hidden oasis.

“You can’t believe you’re in the middle of the city,” he said.

“It’s like being in your own eco retreat, yet you’re around corner from Nightcliff and 10 minutes form the city.

“It’s so peaceful being surrounded by tropical gardens right by the beach.

“It’s an incredibly relaxing and special place after a busy day at work, and I think it’s good for your mental health.”

Selling agent Andrew Harding of Ray White Darwin said the property was truly unique in the local market.

“This is one of the best homes in Coconut Grove, with only a lush expanse of greenery between you and the ocean,” he said.

“It’s right on the beach and less than 10 mins from Darwin city. There would be less than five homes in Darwin that have those features.

“The home has won several design awards and featured in multiple magazines over the years.

“It is also one of only a few homes in the NT that feature the crow’s nest lookout.

“It’s truly a once in a generation opportunity to secure such a unique tropical oasis.”
