$15m+: Iconic Melbourne nightclub Revolver Upstairs goes to auction

The home of iconic Melbourne nightclub Revolver Upstairs where celebrities including actor Hugh Jackman and rapper Snoop Dogg have partied is in negotiations for a $15m-plus sale.

Owners of the heritage-listed Prahran building where Revolver is based put the site on the market hoping to top the figure last month.

The Chapel St venue went under the hammer today and with two bidders vying for it attracted offers from $12m to a final bid at $15m, before it was passed in for negotiations.

In the lead up to the auction it was advertised as ovvering 1287sq m of “prime land” and “incredible future upside potential” suggesting the next owners might not intend to leave the longstanding nightclub tenant in place.

Also fondly known as Revs, it is one of the few remaining night spots in Victoria’s capital to remain open for 24 hours on weekends.

Since opening in 1997, it has been a mainstay of Melbourne’s night-life and hosted performances by acts such as Fatboy Slim, The Avalanches, Fred Again, Architecture in Helsinki, Aloe Blacc and Jane’s Addiction singer Perry Farrell.

In 2008, Snoop Dogg attended Revolver to launch a sunglasses range, and in the 1990s then-husband and wife, actors Hugh Jackman and Deborra-Lee Furness, were among the celebrities photographed at the hotspot.

Revolver is among more than 30 tenancies within the Chapel St, Prahran site.

The buildings housing Revolver and its fellow tenants were originally built in 1914.

Revolver also hit the headlines after a 31-year-old man was left in a coma following a stabbing on the dance floor in September 2024.

The 1287sq m site incorporating Revolver includes more than 30 commercial tenancies, Colonel Tan’s Thai restaurant among them, plus a loft above the nightclub with 9m-high ceilings.

The tenants include a mix of hospitality, retail, creative studios, offices, and co-working and event spaces.

Building manager Kurt Falkenstein said the space had been the long-time home and studio of Revolver co-founder and Thai pop star Tan Punturaumporn.

The devout Buddhist’s permanent return to Thailand to pursue charitable work prompted the owners to list the property.

Punturaumporn established Revolver alongside publican and restaurateur Camillo Ippoliti who is also behind other venues including Cookie and Toff in Town.

Revolver and the premises’ other tenants are spread across two separate buildings at 229-231 Chapel St and 24 Macquarie St.

Originally built in 1914, the address forms part of the heritage-listed Colosseum building which previously served as a department store, parachute factory and bakeries.

Christie’s International, Victoria agency principal Sean Cussell and JLL’S Josh Rutman, Jesse Radisich and Will Connolly managed the marketing campaign.

After the buildings were listed, Mr Rutman said he expected to see significant interest in the site from both local and offshore buyers.

More than 1460 homes are slated to go under the hammer across Victoria this week after the state achieved a 66 per cent clearance rate last week, according to PropTrack.
