150yo home saved from wrecking ball up for sale

34 Stevens St, Yeronga

One of Brisbane’s oldest timber homes has hit the market after a remarkable escape from demolition to make way for the Story Bridge.

Known as ‘Kingsley’, the grand character home was originally built in the 1870s and relocated from Kangaroo Point across several suburbs in the 1930s.

The extensively renovated home at 34 Stevens St, Yeronga is up for sale for the first time in nearly 40 years, via a best offers campaign with Place Woolloongabba agents Zac Fields and Mitchell Smith.

The character house was transported from Kangaroo Point when the Story Bridge was built

Owners Brian and Elaine Egan paid just $52,000 for the four-bedroom, two-bathroom home on a 744 sqm parcel in 1986.

“We’ve always seen ourselves as custodians rather than owners,” Ms Egan said.

“It’s a home with soul; it’s been part of Brisbane’s story for generations.”

The Egans raised and extended the home while preserving its 19th-century details, from hand turned finials to French doors and sandstone steps engraved by renowned sculptor Dr Rhyl Hinwood AM, creator of the Australian Coat of Arms in Parliament House.

“Every feature has a story,” Mr Egan said. “We wanted to honour its past and preserve it for the next family.”

Mr Fields said the house was one of the city’s most significant private heritage holdings.

“To find a timber home of this age, provenance and preservation in inner Brisbane is almost unheard of,” Zac said.

“The Egans have been extraordinary custodians. Their respect for the home’s story and craftsmanship is evident in every inch.”

Mr Smith of Place described Kingsley as “a masterclass in preservation and storytelling.”

“In a market full of new builds, Kingsley stands apart. It’s the kind of home you simply can’t recreate,” he said.
