Revealed: The Australian suburbs most overrun by possums

I’ve never been a fan of horror movies.

Too much screaming, too many jump scares, and don’t even get me started on the gore. Unfortunately, life doesn’t always let you opt out of the genre. Sometimes it brings the horror film straight to your bed at 2am – in the form of a dead possum.

A couple of months ago, I was soundly asleep when my dog Agnes decided I needed a gift. Like the generous housemate she is, she dropped what I thought was one of her rain-soaked toys into my arms.

I lazily flicked it off the bed, heard it thud on the floor, and rolled over.

Agnes, delighted, bounded after it and leapt back up, dumping it on me once again.

Except this time, my hand brushed claws.

Adrenaline surged, my survival instincts kicked in, and I turned on the light to find a very much not alive, drool-soaked possum staring back at me.

Cue banshee-level screaming, flailing limbs, and a dramatic escape roll over my husband, who definitely didn’t sign up for live-action The Exorcist: Possum Edition.

Agnes, meanwhile, looked smug.

Proud.

Triumphant.

Like a cat who’d aced its final exam.

How my dogs helped me build wealth

Aussie homeowners are being warned of severe possum problems this spring, with possum infestations peaking from August to November.

And while my household drama might sound like an isolated horror-comedy, it turns out I’m not the only Aussie forced into middle-of-the-night possum confrontations.

According to new Airtasker data, possum infestations are peaking right now, with demand for possum removal services soaring 40 per cent in August compared to previous months – and a 15 per cent year-on-year rise in September.

And while my possum-pocalypse occurred in SA, the nation’s possum capital turns out to be Melbourne.

Licensed Pest Technician and Tasker Ibby El-Jamal says Melbourne’s Inner East is ground zero for possum chaos, with removal tasks there running at three times the national average.

“Melbourne’s combination of possum-friendly old housing with gaps and roof cavities can make DIY removal tricky, which when breed like wildfire,” he says.

“The noisy breeding and fighting is a nuisance at all hours, especially when it’s dark, as they are nocturnal, and people would rather pay a pest control expert than do it themselves.

“That leads to high demand, as proven by the amount of possum removal tasks posted on Airtasker.”

Possums are cute – until you wake up next to a dead one.

Possums making it into homes also tend to leave unwanted gifts.

The Inner East is followed closely by Melbourne’s Inner South, with both regions having a rate of tasks per 100,000 population 300 per cent higher than the national average.

Sydney suburbs like North Sydney, Hornsby and the Northern Beaches also made the top 10 possum hotspots, but Melbourne still takes the crown, with 60 per cent more removal jobs than Sydney.

So if you hear strange thuds in the night, it’s probably not ghosts. It’s possums.

And if you’ve got an enthusiastic pet like mine? Well, let’s just say – consider investing in industrial-strength bed sheets.

Top tips to prevent pests from taking over

Focus on prevention first

Block off entry points by sealing cracks, adding door sweeps to wide gaps, and even using mesh over weep holes. Simple steps like closing windows when you leave can also help keep out pests. The easiest way to deal with pests is to discourage them from getting in. Keep your home tidy, seal food properly in containers, wipe down benches regularly, and empty bins often.

Act early – especially in spring leading into summer

Experts say infestations spike in the warmer months as heat speeds up pest breeding cycles. With more food and water available, pests spread faster, especially in densely populated cities like Sydney. Prevention and quick action are key — deal with pests at the first sign before they multiply.

Use possum repellent

Deakin University data shows effective possum repellents include Tabasco Sauce, garlic, Indonesian fish sauce, and hot mustard which deter possums through two chemical senses: smell and taste.

Designer opens doors to home inspired by Ford ute

If the classic Aussie ute was a house, this would be it.

Though missing the signature tray and in a pastel green shade that’s more Kombi van than work horse white, the home embodies the versatile ethos behind the vehicle’s creation, according to its creator, celebrity architect Joe Snell.

The House Rules judge and host of Dream Homes Revealed and Australia’s Best House, whose high-profile clients include Guy and Jules Sebastian, put the realities of modern family life first when designing his own Queensland residence.

The family are throwing open the doors to their UTE House as part of Gold Coast Open House

Conceived after Snell moved from Sydney to the Gold Coast with wife, Laura, and their three children, the home answers a common pain point — combining living and working environments for busy families.

Located in the Gold Coast suburb of Southport, this four-bedroom family home with a pool is also Snell’s architectural studio. It features a fully functional, multi-person home office, seamlessly integrating professional and personal life.

The home’s distinctive mint green facade

The ute was born in 1934 after a Victorian farmer’s wife asked Ford for a vehicle that could take her family to church on Sunday and haul pigs to market on Monday.

Ford designer Lew Bandt delivered the solution, creating the first “coupe utility” by combining the cabin comfort of a sedan with the practicality of a truck’s tray.

The design quickly took off, becoming a staple on farms across the country and an enduring symbol of Aussie practicality.

“To me, that is the great coming together of home and work in a vehicle and I decided to do that in a home,” Snell said.

“The house has a modern cube look which is quite commercial, then I used weatherboards as a way of making it more domestic.”

The Ford ute is an enduring symbol of Aussie practicality

Combined with whites and timbers, the home’s distinctive mint hue feels fresh and inviting by day, deepening in the twilight to add another dimension of duality.

Sitting between a residential area and a business zone, the 2023-built UTE House

represents a new kind of dwelling: one that not only houses a family but also sustains it financially.

“I really believe the Gold Coast could lead in new ways of working where we should be encouraging people to come to the city, bring their knowledge and work in whichever way enables them to be successful.

“Entrepreneurial people tend to never switch off — my work is my life and my life is my work, I do way more than 9 to 5 but I do odd hours too, depending on when I am available or when an idea strikes, and a home office can be very helpful for that and not as invasive for the family,” he said.

Upstairs, a study nook is located opposite the kitchen, a homework spot for the couple’s three sons, while Laura also works on her corporate gifting business, The Goods Tube.

The Snells opened the doors to their showstopper residence as part of this weekend’s Gold Coast Open House.

The event unlocked access to some of the city’s most intriguing spaces, from heritage landmarks to bold contemporary design, Gold Coast Open House chair Chris Cumming said.

“Architecture tells the story of who we are,” Mr Cumming said.

“From heritage treasures that preserve our history to bold new projects that redefine our future, design gives us a sense of place, belonging and identity.

“By stepping inside these spaces, our community and our visitors can discover how design influences our daily lives, our wellbeing, and the way we connect with each other.”

Petrusma Property senior representative Kahn Duffey said the chance to buy by the beach in Lauderdale’s Balook St is a special one that doesn’t come along often.

Beauty CEO’s $80k first-home gamble pays big

Priscilla Hajiantoni

She poured her first-home deposit into launching a viral beauty brand, now Bangn Body CEO Priscilla Livock is reaping the rewards, snapping up a $2.42 million designer home on the Gold Coast.

The Melbourne-based entrepreneur, whose cult skincare products are stocked in Sephora, has secured a stunning Palm Beach residence that will serve not only as a luxury holiday escape, but also as a glamorous photo shoot location for her and other brands.

The beautifully renovated property at 4 Barklya Place was a strategic acquisition, brokered by buyers’ agent Jake Edwards.

“Priscilla’s brief was clear,” Mr Edwards said.

“She wanted a beautiful Gold Coast home that could be a personal retreat, but crucially, also a ready-to-go, aesthetically perfect backdrop for Bangn Body’s campaigns.

“This property ticked every box.”

Buyers agent Jake Edwards

Ms Livock said she “could not get this house out of my head”, after it was initially snapped up by another buyer.

“My husband said to me, ‘you have to let it go, it’s sold’, then literally a day later Jake [Edwards] called and said, ‘it’s on the table again’,” she said.

“There are a lot of coastal homes in Queensland, but we wanted something with a little more character.

“The overall vibe of this house was just so aligned with my aesthetic and what I love. Ultimately, it’s a really beautiful backdrop for Bangn Body, but also I want to be able to give a lot of value for other brands to showcase their products.”

It’s a power move that signals Bangn Body’s continued expansion, with the Gold Coast rapidly growing as a key creative hub.

Six years ago, Ms Livock and her husband, Jake Livock, put $80,000 they had saved for a first-home deposit towards her goal to create a range of products born from her personal struggle with acne and eczema.

She quit her corporate job, put her wedding on hold, and even moved back in with her mum to chase her entrepreneurial dream.

The gamble paid off, with Bangn Body quickly building a cult following and turning over $8m in its first two years, earning Ms Livock a spot of Forbes Asia 30 Under 30 rich list in 2021.

The couple flipped their first home, bought in Greensborough, Victoria in 2021, investing in another renovator in Melbourne’s north, as well as an investment property on the Mornington Peninsula.

Planet Home Lending appoints John Adams as renovation leader

Planet Home Lending on Thursday announced the appointment of John Adams as retail renovation leader as the company seeks to enhance its home renovation expertise and unlock more housing opportunities for borrowers.

Adams will focus on training and supporting Planet’s distributed retail loan originators and educating real estate agents nationwide. He will also educate veterans and first-time homebuyers about the potential of renovation loans.

“Planet was one of the first lenders to bring VA renovation lending to market — and remains one of the only companies offering it at scale,” Adams said. “That means veterans don’t have to settle for a less-than-perfect house. They can buy a home in the location they want, even if it needs work or is difficult to insure.

“There’s intrinsic value in making a house your own instead of going with the previous homeowner’s choices and waiting to do renovations,” he added. “Millennials and Gen Z buyers, veterans and families caring for loved ones don’t want to wait years to remodel — they want a house that reflects their taste, in the right neighborhood, today. Renovation lending makes that possible while building long-term generational wealth.”

Another part of Adams’ new role includes delivering live and on-demand training for LOs and real estate agents. This aims to create a repeatable playbook for retail loan officers to grow their market share while collaborating with Planet’s marketing team to drive education and lead generation.

“John wakes up every day thinking about how property builds wealth, and he has shown hundreds of people how to overcome their fears of renovation lending,” said Matt Payan, Planet Home Lending’s senior vice president of national production and distributed retail.

“His expertise, energy and innovative approach are a perfect fit for Planet’s entrepreneurial culture and our commitment to supporting customers throughout their homeownership journey.”

Adams is the author of “House Hacking: Using Renovation Loans for a Better Way to Buy a Home,” and a portion of the book’s proceeds are donated to K9s For Warriors.

“I chose Planet because it has the scale, talent and resources to move the adoption of renovation loans forward,” Adams said. “Planet understands what it takes to bring clarity to renovation lending. We have the subject matter experts, the systems and the drive to connect every dot for our customers and partners.”

Musical theatre star Chelsea Gibb lists off-grid Surf Coast farmhouse

Musical theatre and television star Chelsea Gibb is bringing down the curtain on her family’s off-grid country home in the Surf Coast hinterland.

The Moriac-based performer and her husband, free-range farmer Hayden Findlay, are selling their contemporary sustainable farmhouse to pursue bigger pastures.

Gibb is best known for playing the lead role in Chicago in four-year run across Australia and South East Asia.

The six-bedroom house has grid independence thanks to a solar system with a 32kW battery and an automated back-up generator.

She has a string of other musical theatre credits to her name, as well as appearances in All Saints and the George of the Jungle 2 movie.

In recent years, the versatile leading lady has turned her hand to farming at the couple’s 16.59ha property.

A six-bedroom, solar passive house with sweeping rural views is the centrepiece of the much-loved rural sanctuary located about 15 minutes from the outskirts of Geelong.

The farm, listed for $4.4m through Maxwell Collins, Geelong agent Laura Vander Noord, also includes a multipurpose venue with an industrial kitchen formerly used as a cafe.

The recycled brick wall creates a thermal mass in the open-plan living room.
Gibb loves a bath.

“Hayden designed the whole thing himself, he’s very clever,” Gibb said.

“It’s off-grid so we don’t have any bills at all … and it’s the luxury life of not being too far away from everything.

“For us, we just needed some more land. Hayden’s got bigger dreams with the regenerative farming.”

Burnished concrete floors and a recycled brick wall feature in home’s main living pavilion, which showcases north-facing views over a mature river red gum tree.

Other highlights includes a private walled courtyard with an outdoor bath and shower off the main bedroom suite and an automated off-grid solar system that keeps the lights on.

The property’s river red gum is never far from view.
The house is sited to maximise the northern orientation.

Gibb said the couple had five children between them, but future proofed the design with removable internal walls that have enabled them to reclaim bedrooms now some have left the nest.

“We have a sauna room, a gym room and a study, plus three children’s bedrooms and a spare room,” she said.

But it’s possibly the oversized walk-in pantry and organic strawberry patch that she will miss the most.

“We are very privileged out here to have this gorgeous life, I would struggle to live in Melbourne now,” she said.

Existing home sales show year-over-year growth again

Existing home sales have shown year-over-year growth for two consecutive months, as mortgage rates have remained below 6.64% for the same period. However, let’s remember that the bar is very low for yearly growth. In fact, for many months, I’ve said that the reports coming out from June to October — which will be reported from July to November — will have the lowest year-over-year comps in history, so take the growth with a grain of salt.

However, looking forward, purchase applications have just had their best eight weeks of the year and this data line typically doesn’t reflect in the sales data until 30-90 days later. So we can still see some growth in existing home sales as the year progresses.

We really need 12-14 weeks of consistently positive weekly purchase application data to be a material event and in the last eight weeks we’ve had seven positive and only one negative, marking eight straight weeks of double-digit year-over-year growth. If we can string out four to six more week of positive purchase apps data, we can see some growth from these low levels.

chart visualization

Existing home sales

From NAR: Total existing-home sales for August:

  • 0.2% decrease in total existing-home sales, month-over-month to a seasonally adjusted annual rate of 4.0 million.
  • 1.8% increase in sales year-over-year.

“Home sales have been sluggish over the past few years due to elevated mortgage rates and limited inventory,” said NAR Chief Economist Lawrence Yun. “However, mortgage rates are declining and more inventory is coming to the market, which should boost sales in the coming months.”

Earlier this year, I mentioned that if home sales remain steady at around 4 million, we will still see year-over-year growth despite elevated mortgage rates, as our Housing Market Tracker data indicated slight year-over-year increases. It will be interesting to observe how the rest of the year unfolds, especially since the comparisons for November and December will be more challenging. Those results will be reported in December and January. However, for now, sales have done better this year than last year at this time with 1.8% year-over-year growth.

chart visualization

Housing inventory

Inventory in August:

  • 1.53 million units: Total housing inventory down 1.3% from July and up 11.7% from August 2024 (1.37 million).
  • 4.6-month supply of unsold inventory, no change from July and up from 4.2 months in August 2024.

Housing inventory has decreased slightly with the NAR data and we may have already reached this year’s peak of 1.55 million, as reported by the NAR. The growth of inventory has been one of the best stories in 2025 for the U.S. economy.

However, with our own HousingWire Data on inventory, we’ve seen housing inventory growth slowing since mid-June, while still showing year-over-year gains. We went from 33% year-over-year growth down to 20% the last few months.

Still, the most notable aspect of the housing market has been the increase in inventory, as price growth has cooled and is now showing a year-over-year increase of just 2.2%. Historically, normal inventory levels range between 2 million to 2.5 million. (For context, In 2007, inventory peaked at 4 million.) If current inventory levels remain between 1.52 million and 1.93 million, discussions regarding low inventory will become less relevant, as sufficient supply will be available in the market.

chart visualization

Conclusion

It’s been a good week for housing data, with purchase apps up, new home sales beating expectations, year-over-year growth in existing home sales and inventory up year over year. Considering the real negative take on housing data early in the year, things have improved. When mortgage rates get below 6.64% and head toward 6% the housing dynamics change and 2025 is now the third time since late 2022 that we’ve seen this happen.
