‘Some idiot complained’: Woman told to rip up fake lawn by council
Artificial lawns have become increasingly popular with timepoor residents and those in areas sometimes impacted by water shortages or drought.
A single complaint from an anonymous neighbour has seen council warn an Aussie woman to rip up her flawless fake lawn – sparking fury among residents.
The resident Amanda Blair has been told to remove the artificial turf that has been immaculate on her front verge for five years, after a mystery neighbour reportedly dobbed her in – sparking outrage online and across suburbs nationwide.

A Gold Coast homeowner has been told to rip this up by council.
The Mermaid Beach resident asked for advice in her neighbourhood Facebook group on any issues with having fake grass on her front lawn, stating she’d received a warning from the Gold Coast City Council.
“Some idiot has decided to ring council who now demand we rip it up and replace with real grass,” she said. “Yes it’s council land yet they won’t mow it or maintain it. Any advice? Pretty annoyed as we wanted a low maintenance yard.”
“We have had fake high quality grass which almost looks like real grass on the front footpath of our home for over 5 years. It has never deteriorated or looked untidy, always pristine.”
One commenter didn’t hold back: “If the person that reported you is on here, you’re an absolute tw*t.”
Another wrote: “Gee we can’t have tidy gardens without pissing off a Karen or a Kevin.”
Many pointed out that the council itself uses artificial turf across the Gold Coast – from playgrounds to Burleigh and Miami beachfront areas – questioning why residents were being punished for doing the same.
“GCCC has fake grass on the nature strip between Burleigh surf club and the pavilion,” one woman said. “But that’s OK – hypocrisy.”

Another said: “They put it everywhere in parks but call yours a trip hazard? You must’ve pissed someone off.”
Some residents warned she should expect a big fine if she refuses to comply, saying residents other suburbs like Sovereign Island and Hedges Ave have already been hit with similar orders.
“Council has made people on Sovereign Island rip up their nature strips where artificial grass has been laid. Can cause carpet burns if people fall on it and also a trip hazard if seams come unstuck,” one commenter said.
Another added “and yet it’s perfectly OK to walk on broken and uneven foot paths”.

Others urged her to push back against the council move.
“Take photos of all the fake turf the council uses and ask why they can do it but you can’t,” one said, while another’s creative solution was “just tell them you don’t know who put it there” – which was not as extreme as the suggestion to “just concrete it”.
There was a way to make council do it if you can’t, another said – by providing them with evidence she doesn’t have the capacity to maintain a lawn. Another said there was a service for disabled residents too: “They will mow it for you … you may need a doctors letter. Will do your bins too.”
Ms Blair said she has written to her local member Ray Stevens for support and would update the group once she decided what to do.
