This sprawling retro home on a big block in Nightcliff is on the market for the first time since it was built post-Tracy.
The five-bedroom house sits on a 974 sqm block at 10 Kurrajong Cres, Nightcliff, and was the family home of Darwin locals Gaetano and Flavia De Luca and their three children.
The couple’s daughter, Sonia Triantafillos said she and her two brothers loved growing up in Kurrajong Cres home.
“We used to get together with family all the time,” she said.
“I remember birthdays on the back veranda and we’d have big parties and barbecues.
“My dad was a kind man and he loved celebrating and inviting friends over.
“All our 16th, 18th and 21st parties were there and our friends used to come play and hang out.
“We had friends in neighbourhood, too, and we’d go jump on their trampoline and swim in their pools.”

Mrs Triantafillos said her father bought the block before Cyclone Tracy but didn’t commence building the epic home until after.
“He came to Australia from Sicily in the late 50s and he started out with a house on Phoenix St and then built eight flats on Chapman Rd.
“He bought the block (on Kurrajong Cres) just before Cyclone Tracy, but when Tracey hit it had just a concrete slab on the block.”
Mrs Triantafillos said her father, who was a painter by trade and also a skilled handyman, helped rebuild Darwin and then got to building the family home.
“He built downstairs first so we could live in it and slowly finished off the rest over years,” she said.
“Eventually he finished upstairs and my brothers and I got to move into our own rooms.”
Mrs Triantafillos said while the home was now dated and needed some love, it was big, beautiful and solid – perfect for a large family.
“You could do a lot with it,” she said.
“The rooms are all huge, especially my mum’s room.
“There’s nothing that compares to the size of her bedroom with the ensuite – it’s almost like three rooms in one.”

The substantial home is spread across two levels.
On the ground floor there is a dedicated entry space and a lounge room with a bar featuring a curved wall.
There is separate dining room and a kitchen with plenty of bench and cupboard space plus enough room for a full dining suite.
There is also a full size laundry, a bathroom and a large bedroom on this level.
Both the bedroom and the kitchen open to the big back veranda that looks out over the backyard.
Upstairs, the huge main bedroom has a private balcony and an ensuite.
There are three more spacious bedrooms along with a bathroom and a study, which could also be used as a bedroom.

Two of the bedrooms open to the front balcony and there is a second balcony at the back of the home, plus a rooftop terrace over the double garage.
The property is a short walk to the Nightcliff foreshore and close to shops, school and cafes.
Mrs Triantafillos said the home was in a great street with predominantly owner occupier neighbours.
“It’s such a nice part of Nightcliff,” she said.
“You can go easily go for a walk along the foreshore or go down to the beach.”
Mrs Triantafillos said her father sadly passed away in 2010 and her mother was looking to downsize, so the time had come to say goodbye to the family home.
